Why Algebra 1 Students Should Start Thinking About the ACT Now

Why Algebra 1 Students Should Start Thinking About the ACT Now

If your student is finishing Algebra 1, now is the perfect time to start thinking ahead.

At the St. Charles Tutoring Lab, we encourage families to begin planning for the ACT earlier than most people expect. There is a common misconception that students should wait until junior year to take the ACT—but that is not the most effective strategy for many students.

The truth is: students are in their academic prime right now.

As students complete Algebra 1, they are actively building the exact skills the ACT measures—problem-solving, reading comprehension, and mathematical reasoning. Introducing the ACT early allows students to grow into the test instead of feeling pressure to perform on it later.

Start Early. Build Confidence. Reduce Pressure.

We recommend that college-bound students consider taking the ACT:

• Once in 9th grade (for exposure)

• Again in 10th grade (for growth)

• Again in 11th grade (for peak performance)

This approach helps students:

• Become familiar with the structure of the test

• Build confidence over time

• Identify strengths and areas for improvement early

• Reduce stress during junior year

Let’s Clear Up a Common Myth

Many families believe students can only take the ACT once. That is not true.

Students can take the ACT multiple times.

What is true:

• Students must take the full test each time (not just one section)

• Scores can improve with practice and preparation

• Colleges often consider the highest scores

Taking the ACT more than once is not a setback—it is a strategy.

Upcoming ACT Opportunities

Families should consider registering for:

• April ACT (if still available)

• Summer ACT test dates

Early testing gives students a major advantage going into high school and beyond.

Final Thought

The ACT is not something to fear—it is something to prepare for.

The earlier students start, the more confident, capable, and successful they become.

Let’s shift the mindset from “wait until later” to “start building now.”
