A Second Chance After an AP Exam: How CLEP and ACT Can Keep Your Student on Track
Every year, students across the country take Advanced Placement (AP) exams with the hope of earning college credit.
But what happens when the score doesn’t come back the way you expected?
For many families, it can feel discouraging. Time was invested. Effort was given. Expectations were high.
However, one test score does not define your student’s future.
In fact, this moment can become an opportunity.
There Is Still a Clear Path Forward
If your high schooler took an AP exam and did not pass, there are still two powerful ways to stay on track:
- Earning college credit through CLEP
- Strengthening college admission and scholarship opportunities through the ACT
Together, these two strategies can completely shift your student’s trajectory.
Option 1: Earn College Credit Through CLEP
The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) allows students to demonstrate what they know and earn college credit—without being tied to a single test attempt.
With support from Modern States Education Alliance, students can prepare for CLEP exams using structured, guided resources designed to help them succeed.
Instead of losing time after an AP setback, students can:
- Earn real college credits while still in high school
- Strengthen their understanding of key subjects
- Rebuild confidence with a clear plan
- Continue progressing toward graduation goals
Option 2: Build Scholarship Power Through the ACT
While CLEP helps students earn college credit, the ACT plays a critical role in college admissions and scholarship opportunities.
Many families focus heavily on GPA and coursework, but the ACT often determines:
- Eligibility for merit-based scholarships
- Admissions decisions at many colleges and universities
- Financial aid opportunities beyond FAFSA
A strong ACT score can translate into thousands of dollars in scholarship funding.
More importantly, the ACT is not a one-time opportunity. Students can prepare, retake, and improve.
A Real Conversation Parents Need to Hear
To be direct with families:
Current 9th graders should strongly consider testing this summer.
Early exposure matters.
One of our students, Andre, attended our ACT webinar as a freshman and scored a 27 on his first attempt.
That score did not happen by accident—it happened because he started early.
More importantly, he would not have understood the impact of that score if he had not been introduced to college readiness at the right time.
Starting early changes awareness.
Awareness changes outcomes.
Introducing Our June ACT Camp
The ACT is currently enrolling for June in preparation for the July test date.
St. Charles Tutoring Lab is offering a June ACT Camp designed to provide focused, high-impact preparation for students who are ready to take that next step.
This camp is ideal for students who want to:
- Establish or improve their ACT baseline score
- Learn proven test strategies and pacing techniques
- Strengthen skills in reading, English, and math
- Build confidence before testing
This is not just practice—it is structured preparation with intention.
Why “Early and Yearly” Matters
College readiness is not built in 11th grade. It is built over time.
In my own home, I started my daughter with ACT preparation in 8th grade.
Because of that consistency, she scored a 35 on the ACT her junior year.
She is now entering college already 50% complete, having earned credits through CLEP, dual enrollment, and AP courses.
That outcome did not happen overnight.
It took:
- Early exposure
- Yearly testing
- Consistent preparation
- Determination
This is why we emphasize an “early and yearly” approach to ACT preparation.
Why This Matters After an AP Setback
An AP exam is one opportunity.
But college readiness is not built on one test—it is built on strategy.
By combining CLEP and ACT preparation, students can:
- Recover from an AP exam that did not go as planned
- Still earn college credit before graduation
- Increase their competitiveness for college admissions
- Position themselves for scholarship opportunities
This is what true college readiness looks like—not perfection, but persistence with a plan.

If your student did not pass an AP exam, this is not a failure.
It is feedback.
And with the right support, your student can still earn college credit, improve their test scores, and position themselves for both admission and scholarships.
The difference is having a plan—and starting early.
