Why Rising 9th Graders Should Start ACT Prep This Summer

At  St. Charles Tutoring Lab, one of the biggest lessons we’ve learned as parents and educators is simple:

The students who start preparing early often have more options later.

That is exactly why our upcoming ACT Camp is open to rising 9th graders.

Many families assume the ACT is “something to worry about later,” but students who begin building skills early often experience:

  • Less stress in high school
  • Stronger academic confidence
  • Better scholarship opportunities
  • More familiarity with testing
  • More time to improve scores gradually

The ACT is not just a senior-year test. It is a skills-based exam connected to reading, math, science reasoning, and writing abilities students are already developing in middle school and early high school.

Why Start in 9th Grade?

Rising 9th graders are at a powerful stage academically. This is when students begin:

  • Algebra foundations that appear on the ACT
  • Higher-level reading comprehension
  • Science interpretation skills
  • Time management habits
  • Academic confidence building

Starting early allows students to grow into the ACT instead of fearing it later.

At our camp, students will learn:

  • ACT structure and timing
  • High-yield math concepts
  • Reading and science strategies
  • Test-taking confidence
  • Scholarship awareness
  • How early preparation creates long-term opportunities

Early Preparation Changed Our Family’s Story

At  St. Charles Tutoring Lab, we believe in teaching from experience.

Our own children began ACT preparation early.

  • One is graduating college as an Honors Research Scholar.
  • One is graduating high school with a strong ACT score and entering college already ahead academically.

Because of early planning, scholarships, dual enrollment, CLEP credits, and intentional preparation, student loans were not part of the plan.

That journey did not begin in 12th grade.
It began years earlier with exposure, strategy, and consistency.

We have also seen the impact beyond our own family.

Earlier this year, a rising 9th grade student attended one of our ACT Scholarship Prep webinars, took the ACT, and earned a 27 composite score as a freshman.

More importantly, he is now positioned for even stronger growth because he has awareness early.

He now understands:

  • how the ACT works,
  • where his strengths are,
  • what skills still need development,
  • and how much time he still has to improve.

That is the power of early exposure.

Instead of waiting until junior or senior year to discover the test, he now has years to grow confidently and strategically.

A freshman score is not a final destination.
It is a starting point.

And when students start early, they often approach high school with greater confidence, clearer goals, and stronger academic direction.

The Goal Is Bigger Than a Test

This camp is not about pressure.

It is about preparation.

We want students to:

  • See college as possible
  • Understand scholarships early
  • Build confidence before high school pressure increases
  • Learn how to study smarter
  • Develop academic discipline and endurance

Students do not have to be “geniuses” to benefit.
They simply need exposure, guidance, and practice.

What Families Can Expect

Our ACT Camp is designed to be:

  • Supportive
  • Interactive
  • Encouraging
  • Strategy-focused
  • Beginner friendly

Students will leave with:

  • Practical test strategies
  • Confidence-building tools
  • Academic planning insight
  • Motivation for high school success

Families will also learn how early preparation connects to:

  • Scholarships
  • Dual enrollment
  • CLEP opportunities

Start Early. Grow Gradually. Build Confidence.

The best time to prepare is before the pressure arrives.

For many students, rising 9th grade is the perfect moment to begin.

At St. Charles Tutoring Lab, we believe students deserve more than last-minute preparation. They deserve strategy, exposure, encouragement, and support early enough to truly benefit from it.

This summer’s ACT Camp is an opportunity for students to begin building those foundations now.
