ACT Success Stories Reinforce the Power of Reading

By Dr. Johnel Robinson, St. Charles Tutoring Lab

There are moments as an educator that remind you why you do this work. Today was one of those days.

As ACT scores continue to come in, I’m encouraged—not simply because students are improving, but because the results are validating the instructional strategies we’ve been emphasizing all along.

Two Students. Two Different Journeys.

This week we celebrated two students who prepared for the ACT in different ways.

One student participated in one of our free ACT webinars and improved his composite score from 18 to 19. Every point matters, and I’m proud of his progress.

Another student committed to private one-on-one tutoring.

His first ACT composite was 17.

His newest score?

23 Composite.

Even more exciting than the overall score was how he improved.

  • English: 11 → 19 (+8 points)
  • Reading: 16 → 23 (+7 points)
  • Composite: 17 → 23 (+6 points)

Those aren’t random improvements.

They reflect intentional instruction, consistent practice, and a willingness to trust the process.

Reading Is the Foundation

As I looked over the score reports, one thing stood out immediately.

The greatest gains came in English and Reading.

That reinforces something we’ve believed at St. Charles Tutoring Lab for years:

Strong readers become stronger test takers.

Reading isn’t just another ACT section.

Students who read efficiently understand math word problems more quickly. They analyze science passages more effectively. They recognize grammar patterns in English. They manage their time better because they spend less time decoding what a question is asking.

Reading is the skill that quietly influences every other section of the ACT.

Why We Created the Deep Dive Reading Lab

These results make me even more excited about our Deep Dive Reading Lab.

The camp isn’t about memorizing vocabulary words or reading faster just for the sake of speed.

Students learn how to:

  • Identify an author’s purpose quickly.
  • Summarize paragraphs in just a few words.
  • Improve reading speed without sacrificing comprehension.
  • Use context clues to determine vocabulary.
  • Recognize evidence before answering questions.
  • Build confidence with increasingly complex passages.

These are lifelong skills—not just test-taking tricks.

Every Student Can Grow

One of the greatest myths surrounding standardized testing is that scores are fixed.

They aren’t.

Students can improve when they receive quality instruction, targeted feedback, and consistent practice.

Every point represents new opportunities—college admissions, scholarships, honors programs, and increased confidence.

Watching these students grow reminds me why St. Charles Tutoring Lab exists.

Our mission has never been simply to raise test scores.

Our mission is to equip students with the skills they need to open doors that once seemed out of reach.

Looking Ahead

More ACT scores are still coming in, and I look forward to celebrating every student’s progress.

To our families: thank you for trusting us.

To our students: your hard work is paying off.

And to those considering ACT preparation, remember this:

A higher score doesn’t happen by accident. It happens through preparation, perseverance, and practice.

We’re honored to be part of that journey.
