New Reading Games + Three ACT Reading Strategies That Are Changing How Our Students Read

At St. Charles Tutoring Lab , we're always looking for ways to make reading instruction engaging while teaching the exact skills students need for standardized tests like the ACT, SAT, PSAT, and state assessments . This week, our Reading Camp students practiced with two new interactive Blooket games: https://play.blooket.com/play?hwId=6a3c61c48befa3b8218e93ca https://play.blooket.com/play?hwId=6a3c61ed10c29da11d0d29e6 These games reinforce vocabulary through context clues while keeping students engaged through friendly competition. But the games are only part of the learning. Three Reading Strategies Every Student Should Master If I could teach students just three reading strategies before they take a standardized test, these would be them. 1. Understand What Each Paragraph Does Many students finish reading a paragraph and can repeat details, but they can't explain why the author included it . Instead of asking: "What did this paragraph say?" We teach students to as...

NCLEX Success Through Gamified Learning: Two Free Blookets for Nursing Students

Preparing for the NCLEX can feel overwhelming. Nursing students are expected to master vast amounts of information while developing the critical-thinking skills needed to prioritize patient care, recognize emergencies, and make safe clinical decisions. One strategy that continues to gain popularity among educators is gamified learning . Platforms like Blooket transform traditional review questions into interactive games that encourage repetition, engagement, and active recall. Research on educational gamification suggests that game-based learning can increase student engagement while reinforcing important concepts. This week, two new NCLEX review Blookets were created to help nursing students strengthen their understanding of nursing priorities and patient safety concepts. Blooket #1: NCLEX Prioritization and Clinical Judgment This review focuses on some of the most frequently tested NCLEX concepts, including: Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs ABCs (Airway, Breathing, Circul...

Student Loans Are Getting Attention—But Families Can Do Even Better: Avoid Them Altogether

Recently, the U.S. Department of Education announced a temporary interest rate reduction for certain federal student loan borrowers. While this may provide relief for current borrowers, families with middle and high school students have an even greater opportunity: Preparing early to reduce or eliminate the need for student loans altogether. At St. Charles Tutoring Lab, we believe college affordability begins years before a student submits a college application. Through strong academics, strategic test preparation, scholarship readiness, and college credit opportunities, families can position themselves to pay less for college and borrow less in the future. The Best Student Loan Is the One You Never Need Many families believe college planning starts during a student’s junior or senior year of high school. In reality, some of the most important decisions that impact college affordability happen much earlier. Students who begin preparing in middle school and early high school can: ...

CLEP Camp Goes Global: From North Alabama to the Philippines

When we launched CLEP Camp, our goal was simple: help students discover affordable pathways to college credit through the Modern States Program and CLEP examinations. What we did not anticipate was how quickly the program would begin connecting learners from different states, grade levels, and even different countries. Recently, we welcomed a gifted 6th-grade student from North Alabama who joined our Spanish CLEP sessions. His enthusiasm for learning reminded us that students do not have to wait until high school to begin exploring college opportunities and academic enrichment. This week, our program reached an exciting milestone. An 18-year-old student from the Philippines joined CLEP Camp and selected the Natural Sciences course through Modern States. His long-term goal is to attend the University of Santo Tomas , one of the most respected universities in the Philippines. Although students may have different educational goals, they share something important in common: a desire to l...

Millions in Free College Money Is Coming—But Most Families Haven’t Heard About It

Parents and students are constantly asking the same question: “How are we going to pay for college?” The good news is that a major change in federal financial aid is creating new opportunities for students across the country. Through the expansion of the Workforce Pell Grant, millions of dollars in financial aid may become available to students pursuing career training programs—not just traditional four-year college degrees. For many families, this could open doors that previously seemed out of reach. What Is Changing? Traditionally, Pell Grants have helped students pay for college degree programs. Now, eligible students may also be able to use Pell Grant funding for approved short-term workforce training programs that prepare them for high-demand careers. These programs can often be completed in a matter of weeks or months rather than years. Potential career pathways include: Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Phlebotomy HVAC Welding Automotive Technology Commercial Truck...
